Knowledge

Know your iPhone before choosing a charging port repair

Some iPhones look almost identical but use completely different charging port assemblies. iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C, while iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning — so the connector alone already splits the range. Even within the same generation the parts differ. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro both have USB-C, but the Pro models support faster USB 3 data transfer and use a different charging port assembly. It’s a similar story with the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max: each needs the charging port flex designed specifically for that model. That difference matters because the exact model determines which part fits your iPhone, which options are available and how much the repair costs. You can check yours by going to Settings → General → About → Model Name. If your iPhone is flat and won’t charge at all, bring it to MrFix and we’ll identify the model for you before confirming your charging port option and exact repair price.

Before you book an iPhone repair

A few simple checks are worth trying before bringing your iPhone to MrFix. Sometimes what looks like a hardware fault has a straightforward cause, and we’d rather help you avoid paying for a repair you don’t actually need.

If your iPhone won’t charge:

Try another charging cable and mains adapter first. Dust and pocket debris can also collect inside the charging port and prevent the cable from connecting properly. Avoid inserting metal objects or anything that could damage the port. If changing the cable doesn’t help, MrFix can check whether the problem is the port, battery or another charging component.

If your iPhone is slow, freezing or crashing:

Restart the iPhone before assuming something has failed. It’s also worth checking Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Very low available storage can cause poor performance, freezing and other behaviour that can feel like a hardware problem. Freeing some space may be all that’s needed.

If you think your iPhone battery is failing:

Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging and check the Maximum Capacity and any battery messages shown by iOS. The percentage is useful, but how the iPhone behaves matters too. Unexpected shutdowns, rapid battery drain or noticeably reduced everyday battery life can all indicate that the battery needs attention.

If your iPhone screen flickers or behaves strangely:

Don’t automatically assume you need an iPhone screen replacement. Restart the device and check whether the problem continues. If you have persistent flickering, coloured lines, black patches, ghost touch or areas of the touchscreen that don’t respond, MrFix can inspect the display and confirm whether the screen is actually at fault.

If your iPhone has been exposed to water or another liquid:

Avoid charging it and, where possible, switch the device off. Don’t put the iPhone in rice or try to dry the charging port with heat. Liquid can continue affecting internal components even when the phone initially appears to work normally, so having it assessed promptly gives you the best chance of identifying the damage before it becomes worse.

Still not sure? Bring the iPhone to MrFix. We’ll check what’s actually wrong and explain the repair and price before any work begins.

Parts and quality options

At MrFix, we believe a charging port repair is only as good as the part fitted and the care taken fitting it. The right option can depend on your iPhone model, how you use it and your budget. That’s why we explain what is being fitted, what is included and how much it costs before the repair begins.

Quality replacement charging port — our recommended option.

For supported iPhones, we fit charging port assemblies selected for a secure cable fit, stable charging and reliable data transfer. On most iPhones the charging port flex also carries the bottom microphone and other connections, so we choose parts that support these functions properly rather than simply fitting the cheapest port available. Our technicians explain anything relevant to your model before installation so there are no unexpected surprises after your repair.

Port cleaning first — when a new part isn’t needed.

Not every charging problem needs a replacement part. Lint and pocket debris can pack into the charging port over time and stop the cable seating properly. If that turns out to be the cause, we’ll tell you before recommending any replacement, so you don’t pay for a part you don’t need. If the port itself is worn, damaged or corroded, we’ll explain the replacement options and price before any work begins.

Original and genuine options where available.

For customers who want an original part, MrFix can also supply and fit original/OEM charging port options for supported iPhone models where available. The exact part, availability, price and any relevant iOS parts information are explained before you approve the repair.

Premium isn’t only about the part

With eligible premium repairs, the standard of installation matters just as much as the replacement part. Replacing an iPhone charging port usually means opening the device and, on many models, removing the screen and other internal components to reach it.

MrFix technicians use high-quality replacement seals and specialist compression equipment during reassembly. Controlled pressure helps the display and adhesive seat correctly, allowing us to achieve the best practical seal possible after the iPhone has been opened.

Where applicable, this higher-standard reassembly process is also used for our premium charging port, battery, screen and back-glass repair work. Our technicians take additional care with preparation, alignment, sealing and finishing because the aim isn’t simply to make the device work again — we want the finished repair to look, feel and perform as close as reasonably possible to a professionally assembled device.

Opening an iPhone means its original factory water-resistance rating cannot be guaranteed after repair, and we won’t tell customers otherwise. What our Premium service does provide is the additional equipment, replacement sealing materials, controlled compression and technician care required to achieve the best practical standard possible for an independent repair.

A quality replacement or an original part where available — you’ll know what you’re choosing, what’s included and what you’re paying before MrFix fits anything.

Knowledge

Your data during an iPhone repair

Your privacy matters. MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard charging port, screen, battery or other hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs.

We still recommend making a current backup before any repair. An iPhone that is already damaged or experiencing a hardware fault can sometimes deteriorate further, so keeping important photos, messages and other data backed up is always sensible.

For liquid-damaged, no-power or severely damaged iPhones, data recovery cannot be guaranteed. We’ll explain what can realistically be attempted rather than promise a recovery before the condition of the device is known.

Knowledge

After your iPhone repair

Before your iPhone is returned, MrFix tests the repair and relevant device functions. Depending on the work carried out, this can include the display and touchscreen, charging, cameras, speakers, microphones and Face ID where applicable.

For a charging port repair, we check wired charging, cable fit, data connection and the microphones linked to the port, and make sure the device is functioning correctly before handover. We’ll also tell you what was fitted and anything relevant you should know about the repair.

A replacement charging port doesn’t need a special settling-in period. Once the repair has been completed and tested, you can charge and use your iPhone normally.

Depending on the iPhone model and the part you selected, iOS may display a parts notification or different component information in Settings. Where this is expected, we’ll explain it when you choose your repair option rather than leaving you to discover it afterwards.

If something doesn’t seem right after your repair, contact MrFix as soon as you notice it. We’d rather inspect the device promptly and determine whether the issue relates to the fitted part, the repair itself or a separate fault.

Common questions about iPhone repairs

Here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just get in touch — we’re always happy to help.

Will my iPhone still be water resistant after a repair?

Once an iPhone has been opened, its original factory water-resistance rating cannot be guaranteed. With eligible Premium repairs, MrFix uses high-quality replacement seals and specialist compression equipment during reassembly to achieve the best practical seal possible. We still recommend treating a repaired iPhone as not having its original factory IP water-resistance rating.

Will my microphone still work after a charging port replacement?

On most iPhones the bottom microphone is built into the charging port flex, so it is replaced as part of the repair. We test calls, voice recording and other audio input after the repair to make sure everything works as it should. If there are other faults we can identify beforehand, we’ll explain them before the repair begins.

Can MrFix repair an iPhone that is locked to someone else’s Apple Account?

A hardware repair may still be possible, but MrFix cannot remove Apple’s Activation Lock. Activation Lock is an Apple security feature and requires the appropriate Apple Account credentials or Apple’s supported account recovery process. A hardware repair does not bypass it.

Can MrFix repair an iPhone another repair shop has already worked on?

In many cases, yes. Tell us about any previous repairs or replacement parts when you bring or send the iPhone to us. Previous work can affect diagnosis, part compatibility and the condition inside the device, so knowing what’s already been done helps our technicians assess it properly.

Will I lose my data during a repair?

MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard screen, battery or other hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs. However, we still recommend making a current backup before any repair, as unexpected issues can sometimes occur.

Knowledge

Preparing your iPhone for repair

A little preparation can help your repair go more smoothly. Here are a few simple steps to take before you bring or send your iPhone to MrFix.

Back up your data

We always recommend making a current backup using iCloud or a computer before any repair.

Know your passcode

A passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs, but it may be needed to fully test certain functions such as Face ID, Touch ID, cameras or some settings.

Sign out (where possible)

If you can, sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My iPhone. This isn’t always necessary, but it can help with some types of repair and testing.

Tell us about any previous repairs

Let us know if your iPhone has had any previous repairs or if you’re aware of any existing issues.

Bring any accessories that are relevant

If the issue is related to charging, for example, it can be helpful to bring your charging cable or other accessories so we can test them with your device.

What iPhone repairs does MrFix offer?

MrFix repairs the most common iPhone faults, including screen replacement, battery replacement, charging problems, back glass, cameras, speakers, microphones and other supported hardware faults.

For iPhone charging port repairs, choose your exact model to see the available charging port options and price. Most walk-in iPhone charging port repairs are completed in around 60 minutes, and completed repairs come with our 12-month warranty, subject to the warranty terms.

How do I choose the right iPhone model?

Start by choosing your iPhone from the model cards above. Depending on the generation, that might be a Pro Max, Pro, Plus, standard, mini or SE model.

Not sure which one you have? Go to Settings → General → About → Model Name. If your iPhone is flat and won’t turn on to check, bring the iPhone to MrFix and we’ll identify it before confirming your charging port options and price.

Do you repair older iPhones and iPhone SE models?

Yes. We repair every iPhone from the iPhone X series (X, XS, XR) through the later generations, right up to the latest iPhone 17 lineup. Parts availability varies by model. For very old models we’ll confirm parts availability before starting work.

How long does an iPhone repair take?

Most iPhone charging port repairs take around 60 minutes.

More complicated damage or additional faults may require longer. If we find something that changes the expected repair or timescale, we’ll explain it before proceeding.

Can I visit without an appointment?

Yes. No appointment is required for walk-in repairs. You can bring your iPhone to either our Edinburgh City Centre or Corstorphine store during opening hours.

We’ll check the device, confirm the appropriate repair and price, and get your approval before work begins.

Can you collect my iPhone and bring it back after the repair?

Yes. For many Edinburgh customers, our iPhone Collection & Return service can be the smartest and easiest way to get a charging port repaired without making a trip to the shop.

For an additional £20, a MrFix driver can collect your iPhone from your address, bring it to us for repair and return it afterwards. The service covers most of Edinburgh, including Corstorphine, subject to address availability.

Will my data be safe during the repair?

MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward charging port, screen or battery repairs.

We still recommend making a current backup before any repair. For severely damaged, liquid-damaged or no-power devices, data recovery cannot be guaranteed.

Do you offer nationwide iPhone repair by courier?

Yes. If you’re outside Edinburgh, you can use our UK-wide postal repair service.

Send your iPhone to MrFix and we’ll assess the device and confirm the repair and price before proceeding. This means customers across Scotland and the rest of the UK can use MrFix without visiting one of our Edinburgh stores.

What warranty comes with an iPhone repair?

Completed MrFix repairs come with a 12-month warranty on the fitted part and our workmanship.

It covers faults relating to the replacement part or work carried out by MrFix. It does not cover new accidental or physical damage, misuse or unrelated faults that develop afterwards. Liquid-damage repairs are excluded from the standard 12-month warranty because corrosion can continue after repair.

Can I choose which replacement charging port is fitted?

Yes. Depending on your iPhone model, MrFix can fit a quality replacement charging port assembly or, where available, an original/OEM part for supported models. We’ll explain the differences, price, what’s included and any relevant iOS parts information before you choose.
