Know your iPhone before choosing a battery replacement

Some iPhones can look almost identical — and even share the same screen size — while using completely different batteries.

Take the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. Both have a 6.1-inch display and are very similar in size, but they don’t use the same replacement battery. It’s a similar story with the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max: both are large iPhones, but each requires the battery designed specifically for that model.

That difference matters because the exact model determines which battery fits your iPhone, which battery options are available and how much the repair costs. Choosing by appearance or screen size alone can easily lead to the wrong part.

You can check yours by going to Settings → General → About → Model Name. If your iPhone won’t stay on long enough to check, bring it to MrFix and we’ll identify the model for you before confirming your battery option and exact repair price.

Knowledge

Before you book an iPhone repair

A few simple checks are worth trying before bringing your iPhone to MrFix. Sometimes what looks like a hardware fault has a straightforward cause, and we’d rather help you avoid paying for a repair you don’t actually need.

If your iPhone won’t charge:

Try another charging cable and mains adapter first. Dust and pocket debris can also collect inside the charging port and prevent the cable from connecting properly. Avoid inserting metal objects or anything that could damage the port. If changing the cable doesn’t help, MrFix can check whether the problem is the port, battery or another charging component.

If your iPhone is slow, freezing or crashing:

Restart the iPhone before assuming something has failed. It’s also worth checking Settings → General → iPhone Storage, as very low available storage can cause poor performance and freezing. If Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging shows that performance management has been applied, a worn battery may be what’s slowing your iPhone down — and a battery replacement can often help.

If you think your iPhone battery is failing:

Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging and check the Maximum Capacity and any battery messages shown by iOS, such as a “Service” recommendation. The percentage is useful, but how the iPhone behaves matters too. Unexpected shutdowns, rapid battery drain or noticeably reduced everyday battery life can all indicate that the battery needs replacing.

If your screen is lifting or the case looks swollen:

Stop using and charging the iPhone straight away, and don’t press the screen back down. A screen that is lifting away from the frame, or a back that looks bulged, can be a sign of a swollen battery. Keep the device away from heat and bring it to MrFix promptly so we can inspect it and replace the battery safely.

If your iPhone has been exposed to water or another liquid:

Avoid charging it and, where possible, switch the device off. Don’t put the iPhone in rice or try to dry the charging port with heat. Liquid can continue affecting internal components even when the phone initially appears to work normally, so having it assessed promptly gives you the best chance of identifying the damage before it becomes worse.

Still not sure? Bring the iPhone to MrFix. We’ll check what’s actually wrong and explain the repair and price before any work begins.

Parts and quality options

At MrFix, we don’t believe every customer needs the same replacement battery. Your choice can depend on the iPhone model, how long you plan to keep it, how you use it and your budget. That’s why we offer different battery options and explain what is being fitted, what is included and how much it costs before the repair begins.

Premium battery — our recommended battery option.

For supported iPhones, our Premium battery is the option we’re proud to recommend. These batteries are selected for reliable capacity, stable performance and safe everyday charging. Our aim is to give customers who choose an aftermarket battery a high-quality option rather than simply fitting the cheapest cell available.

On some iPhone models, iOS may show an “Important Battery Message” or limit the Battery Health information shown after a non-Apple battery has been fitted. This does not automatically mean there is a fault with the replacement battery. Where a message may appear, our technicians explain it before installation so there are no unexpected surprises after your repair.

Value Edition — a lower-cost option when budget comes first.

We understand that a Premium battery isn’t the right choice for everyone. You may need your iPhone working urgently, be using it temporarily, preparing to replace it soon or simply need to keep the repair cost as low as possible.

For selected models, our Value Edition provides a more affordable battery replacement. It is a standard, budget-focused repair rather than the option we recommend when a Premium battery is available, but we still source the best quality we reasonably can within this price range.

Importantly, Value Edition does not include MrFix’s Premium sealing and specialist compression process. We make the differences clear before installation so you can decide whether the saving or the additional benefits of Premium matter more to you.

Original and genuine options where available.

For customers who want an original part, MrFix can supply and fit genuine Apple battery options for supported iPhone models, subject to availability.

The exact part, availability, price and any relevant iOS battery or parts information are explained before you approve the repair.

Premium isn’t only about the battery

With our Premium battery and eligible premium repairs, the standard of installation matters just as much as the replacement part.

MrFix technicians remove the old battery carefully, fit high-quality replacement adhesive and seals, and use specialist compression equipment during reassembly. Controlled pressure helps the display and adhesive seat correctly, allowing us to achieve the best practical seal possible after the iPhone has been opened.

Where applicable, this higher-standard reassembly process is also used for our premium screen and back-glass repair work. Our technicians take additional care with preparation, alignment, sealing and finishing because the aim isn’t simply to make the device work again — we want the finished repair to look, feel and perform as close as reasonably possible to a professionally assembled device.

Opening an iPhone means its original factory water-resistance rating cannot be guaranteed after repair, and we won’t tell customers otherwise. What our Premium service does provide is the additional equipment, replacement sealing materials, controlled compression and technician care required to achieve the best practical standard possible for an independent repair.

Premium battery, Value Edition or a genuine Apple option where available — you’ll know what you’re choosing, what’s included and what you’re paying before MrFix fits anything.

Knowledge

Your data during an iPhone repair

Your privacy matters. MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard screen, battery or other hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs.

We still recommend making a current backup before any repair. An iPhone that is already damaged or experiencing a hardware fault can sometimes deteriorate further, so keeping important photos, messages and other data backed up is always sensible.

For liquid-damaged, no-power or severely damaged iPhones, data recovery cannot be guaranteed. We’ll explain what can realistically be attempted rather than promise a recovery before the condition of the device is known.

Knowledge

After your iPhone repair

Before your iPhone is returned, MrFix tests the repair and relevant device functions. Depending on the work carried out, this can include charging, battery readings, power and restart behaviour, the display and touchscreen, cameras, speakers and Face ID where applicable.

For a battery replacement, we check that the iPhone charges correctly, holds power and is functioning normally before handover. We’ll also tell you what was fitted and anything relevant you should know about the repair.

A new battery doesn’t need a special calibration or settling-in period, and there’s no need to fully drain it first. Once the repair has been completed and tested, you can charge and use your iPhone normally. Battery life may continue to improve over the first few charge cycles as iOS finishes updating its usage information.

Depending on the iPhone model and the battery you selected, iOS may display a battery message or different Battery Health information in Settings. Where this is expected, we’ll explain it when you choose your repair option rather than leaving you to discover it afterwards.

If something doesn’t seem right after your repair, contact MrFix as soon as you notice it. We’d rather inspect the device promptly and determine whether the issue relates to the fitted part, the repair itself or a separate fault.

Common questions about iPhone repairs

Here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just get in touch — we’re always happy to help.

Will my iPhone still be water resistant after a repair?

Once an iPhone has been opened, its original factory water-resistance rating cannot be guaranteed. With eligible Premium repairs, MrFix uses high-quality replacement seals and specialist compression equipment during reassembly to achieve the best practical seal possible. We still recommend treating a repaired iPhone as not having its original factory IP water-resistance rating.

Will Battery Health show 100% after a battery replacement?

With a genuine Apple battery, Battery Health will normally show the new battery’s Maximum Capacity once iOS has recognised it. With a non-Apple battery, some iPhone models may show an “Important Battery Message” or limit the Battery Health information shown. We’ll explain what to expect for your model and battery option before the repair.

Can MrFix repair an iPhone that is locked to someone else’s Apple Account?

A hardware repair may still be possible, but MrFix cannot remove Apple’s Activation Lock. Activation Lock is an Apple security feature and requires the appropriate Apple Account credentials or Apple’s supported account recovery process. A hardware repair does not bypass it.

Can MrFix repair an iPhone another repair shop has already worked on?

In many cases, yes. Tell us about any previous repairs or replacement parts when you bring or send the iPhone to us. Previous work can affect diagnosis, part compatibility and the condition inside the device, so knowing what’s already been done helps our technicians assess it properly.

Will I lose my data during a repair?

MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard screen, battery or other hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs. However, we still recommend making a current backup before any repair, as unexpected issues can sometimes occur.

Knowledge

Preparing your iPhone for repair

A little preparation can help your repair go more smoothly. Here are a few simple steps to take before you bring or send your iPhone to MrFix.

Back up your data

We always recommend making a current backup using iCloud or a computer before any repair.

Know your passcode

A passcode is not normally required for straightforward repairs, but it may be needed to fully test certain functions such as Face ID, Touch ID, cameras or some settings.

Sign out (where possible)

If you can, sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My iPhone. This isn’t always necessary, but it can help with some types of repair and testing.

Tell us about any previous repairs

Let us know if your iPhone has had any previous repairs or if you’re aware of any existing issues.

Bring any accessories that are relevant

If the issue is related to charging, for example, it can be helpful to bring your charging cable or other accessories so we can test them with your device.

What iPhone repairs does MrFix offer?

MrFix repairs the most common iPhone faults, including battery replacement, screen replacement, charging problems, back glass, cameras, speakers, microphones and other supported hardware faults.

For iPhone battery repairs, choose your exact model to see the available battery options and price. Most walk-in iPhone battery replacements are completed in around 60 minutes, and completed repairs come with our 12-month warranty, subject to the warranty terms.

How do I choose the right iPhone model?

Start by choosing your iPhone from the model cards above. Depending on the generation, that might be a Pro Max, Pro, Plus, standard, mini or SE model.

Not sure which one you have? Go to Settings → General → About → Model Name. If the iPhone won’t stay on long enough to check, bring it to MrFix and we’ll identify it before confirming your battery options and price.

Do you repair older iPhones and iPhone SE models?

Yes. We repair every iPhone from the iPhone X series (X, XS, XR) through the later generations, right up to the latest iPhone 17 lineup. Parts availability varies by model. For very old models we’ll confirm parts availability before starting work.

How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?

Most iPhone battery replacements take around 60 minutes.

More complicated faults, a swollen battery or additional damage may require longer. If we find something that changes the expected repair or timescale, we’ll explain it before proceeding.

Can I visit without an appointment?

Yes. No appointment is required for walk-in repairs. You can bring your iPhone to either our Edinburgh City Centre or Corstorphine store during opening hours.

We’ll check the device, confirm the appropriate repair and price, and get your approval before work begins.

Can you collect my iPhone and bring it back after the repair?

Yes. For many Edinburgh customers, our iPhone Collection & Return service can be the smartest and easiest way to get a battery replaced without making a trip to the shop.

For an additional £20, a MrFix driver can collect your iPhone from your address, bring it to us for repair and return it afterwards. The service covers most of Edinburgh, including Corstorphine, subject to address availability.

Will my data be safe during the repair?

MrFix does not wipe your iPhone as part of a standard hardware repair, and a passcode is not normally required for straightforward screen or battery repairs.

We still recommend making a current backup before any repair. For severely damaged, liquid-damaged or no-power devices, data recovery cannot be guaranteed.

Do you offer nationwide iPhone repair by courier?

Yes. If you’re outside Edinburgh, you can use our UK-wide postal repair service.

Send your iPhone to MrFix and we’ll assess the device and confirm the repair and price before proceeding. This means customers across Scotland and the rest of the UK can use MrFix without visiting one of our Edinburgh stores.

What warranty comes with an iPhone repair?

Completed MrFix repairs come with a 12-month warranty on the fitted part and our workmanship.

It covers faults relating to the replacement part or work carried out by MrFix. It does not cover new accidental or physical damage, misuse or unrelated faults that develop afterwards. Liquid-damage repairs are excluded from the standard 12-month warranty because corrosion can continue after repair.

Can I choose which replacement battery is fitted?

Yes. Depending on your iPhone model, MrFix can offer different battery options.

Our Premium battery is our recommended aftermarket option for supported models. We also offer a lower-cost Value Edition for selected models, while genuine Apple battery options can be supplied for supported models where available.

We’ll explain the differences, price, what’s included and any relevant iOS battery message before you choose.
